Stuart Gitlow, MD, MPH, MBA, DFAPA, DFASAM
Alternate Regional Director, Region III
Born and raised in New York City, Stuart Gitlow, MD, MPH, MBA, DFAPA, DFASAM is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Gitlow focused on epidemiology within his public health training at the University of Pittsburgh, where he completed his psychiatric residency. His fellowship in forensic psychiatry followed at Harvard while on faculty on the addiction service of Massachusetts General Hospital. This was followed more recently by a focus on marketing and finance during his master’s program in Business Administration. Dr. Gitlow's public health expertise informs his writing; he has authored one of the primary textbooks in addictive disease as well as multiple book chapters and scientific articles. Dr. Gitlow regularly lectures internationally to both scientific and lay audiences regarding substance use disorders as well as the impact of substance use itself.
Board certified in general, addiction, and forensic psychiatry, Dr. Gitlow focuses his practice on mental health in aviation, splitting his time among private patients and volunteer work as a Safety Representative for the Federal Aviation Administration. He serves on the faculty at Kaplan, working primarily with international medical graduates, and as a Clinical Associate Professor at West Virginia University. Dr. Gitlow also utilizes his finance and public health skills as a Medical Partner for Limitless Ventures and as Senior Vice President of Ignite Biomedical.
A Past President of ASAM, Dr. Gitlow is now the Vice President of the New York County Medical Society and Vice-Chair of the Addiction Exam Committee for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Active in the AMA House of Delegates since 1985, Dr. Gitlow has served as Chair of the AMA Young Physicians Section, Chair of the Council on Science and Public Health, Vice-Chair of the AMA Online Oversight Panel, and as President of the Executive Committee of the Forum for Medical Affairs. He serves currently as an HOD delegate from ASAM. In the past, he served as a delegate to the Medical Student Section, Resident Physician Section (as it was then known), Young Physician Section, Section on Medical Schools, and Private Practice Physician Section.
Dr. Gitlow has a strong background in communications, having worked as a Producer for ABC Television and as Coordinator for America Online. This led to his serving on the Board at the National Association of Medical Communicators. He has served as an aviator and National Staff Division Chief for the US Coast Guard Auxiliary; in the latter position, he was responsible for managing the Photo Corps of the US Coast Guard. He received multiple Commendations and Awards for his efforts. A commercially rated pilot, Dr. Gitlow is an actively certificated flight and ground aircraft instructor.
